She transformed her ‘plain’ apartment into colourful haven for £3,000!

A woman has transformed her plain apartment into a colourful haven for just £3,000 using rental-friendly tips and tricks – and TikTok users are blown away by the results.

Stephanie Kaluza, 22, a marketing executive from north west London, has a passion for DIY and all things colourful and bright.

After moving into her own apartment in November 2020 – which she rents for £1,100 a month – she was eager to get stuck in with decorating and making the space her own.

The new-build flat was a blank canvas for Stephanie – but all of the changes she made needed to be rental-friendly.

The DIY buff took to social media to get inspiration on how she could add her stamp to the one-bedroom, one-bathroom property.

Using crafty hacks including putting pink vinyl stickers on her kitchen tiles to create a backsplash and upcycling plain shelving units to act as radiator covers, as well as adding her trademark pastel colour scheme throughout, she has given the property a complete overhaul.

“It was a new build flat that was completely unfurnished, so it was very plain with not much character,” Stephanie told Jam Press.

“I used Instagram and Pinterest to gain inspiration, but I’ve always loved colourful spaces.

“It’s nice to have something interesting to look at where you live and I find you can be more creative with colour.

“I like pastel colours and the Danish Scandi style, so I decided to mix natural-coloured materials with pastel pinks and greens.”

Stephanie learned the skills to transform her home from tutorials online, as well as from different companies she bought decor from.

In the kitchen, she used pink stick-on vinyl tiles to create a backsplash – and she believes this alone added brightness to the once drab white kitchen, all for just £80.

She also upcycled plain units to cover her radiators.

Stephanie said: “Originally, the radiators were horrible and all over white.

“I bought some radiator covers from B&Q and ripped out the centre part, as I wanted them to be more than just radiators.

“I upcycled this material using natural and cane webbing in the centre, which was fixed with a staple gun.

“I placed Command Strips to adhere the cover to the wall and this created a level surface for me to add prints and plants.”

The project cost just £300 to complete.

Overall, Stephanie estimates that she has spent £3,000 decking out the place, but puts most of this cost down to curtains and furniture – as well as using rental-friendly tips.

As she is unable to paint the walls and put her own permanent spin on the apartment, she’s taken to buying eccentric furnishings including a quirky green sofa and table units, as well as plenty of artwork.

Stephanie took to TikTok to share the impressive transformation and has since racked up 81,000 followers.

In one post, which has received one million views and 151,000 likes, she shares a clip of her living quarters.

She begins by showing the apartment before she moved in, which was completely empty and lacked any character.

She then cuts to how the property now looks.

As she pans across the living room and gives an insight into the kitchen and bedroom, the camera cuts to show a completely transformed space.

A green sofa, decorated with pink cushions and yellow accessories are shown within the living room.

In the dining area, a bright pink table with pink crockery makes the area pop with brightness.

As she shows off her pastel-obsessed bedroom, the theme appears to continue in the kitchen which looks brand new.

At her desk, cosy lighting and pink artwork tie in the area and accent the other hints of decorative touches throughout the one-bed flat.

“When Oliver Bonas is a personality trait,” one viewer commented.

Another person added: “Colourful.”

“Literally my favourite aesthetic,” someone else said.

Another viewer said: “Oh I’m in love with this.”

“This over grey and sparkly ANYDAY!!!!,” another viewer added.

After sharing an insight into her home, she has been flooded with people asking for inspiration and the response has been overwhelming.

Now, she has shared her top rental-friendly tips for transforming a space.

She said: “Command Strips are a life-saver for hanging up things on the wall without having to drill any holes or leave marks.

“Look for free-standing furniture that can hide plain walls and does not leave any damage behind.

Part Three: First-time buyers, 24 and 25, transform dated property into modern home for just £14,000

Two first-time buyers have transformed their dated home by themselves for just £14,000 but have now increased the value of the property by £45,000.

Ellie Unwin, 24, an accountant, lives in Nottinghamshire, UK with her boyfriend, Harry Baines, 25, in their three-bedroom, semi-detached home that the pair bought in July 2020 for £135,000.

Despite the first-time buyers feeling excited about the features of their new home, which included a large living room with french doors, they knew that the property would need a lot of work.

Having never renovated a house before, the couple started by making a spreadsheet and estimated how much they wanted to spend on each room, alongside researching the best deals and materials which would save them money.

Ellie found inspiration by looking at Pinterest and other people’s renovations online but the pair came up with their own designs and made decisions together about how they wanted their dream home to look.

Thankfully, Harry was on furlough, meaning he was able to do a lot of the renovation – but the pair also roped in Ellie's dad, Paul.

“We discussed the basics and planned to redo the whole bathroom but to keep the units in the kitchen and replace everything else including the doors and worktops,” Ellie told Jam Press.

“Myself and Harry spent our evenings stripping wallpaper with a steamer and scraper, starting in the office and working our way through the bedrooms and downstairs.

“We worked on the main bedroom first and painted the walls, window sill and skirting boards.

“Harry sanded down the wardrobe frames, repainted them and used elbow grease on the doors, which took out all the yellow and they looked like new.”

After placing new hinges and modern door handles, they moved on to putting wallpaper behind their bed and removed the old carpets to put down new ones in all the bedrooms and the landing, which cost £1,063 overall.

In the living room, they removed the cheap electric fire and popped wallpaper on the remaining wall, while paying a plasterer to skim and plaster the ceiling.

They also purchased some laminate flooring from Costco, which cost £720.

She said: “We chose the Golden Select AC5 laminate and decided on this as my dad had this fitted in his living room and we loved it.

“We removed half the skirting near the radiator pipes where Harry used a multi-tool cutter and my dad laid the laminate which took three to four days in total.

“We filled the room with a TV cabinet from IKEA, table and curtains from Next and chairs bought separately from Dunelm.

“The last step was our sofa and chair arriving from Sofology and we got a great deal on these in the clearance costing £1,897 in total."

Overall, the pair spent £4,128 transforming their living room into a cosy space and moved onto the kitchen, where they ripped out most of the room bar the units.

As the units were discoloured, they applied edging and put fablon – self-adhesive plastic sheeting – on the back, which made them look brand new.

They purchased pure white shaker style doors from HomeStyle and fitted these to the units after the worktops were completed.

She said: “My dad used a router and jigsaw to cut the worktops [at an angle] which we bought from the Worktop Express, costing us £265 and fitted them onto the units."

Ellie's dad then tiled the walls with white metro tiles from Wickes (£35.97) before finishing these off with the Chrome Homelux trim from Wickes (£40).

After a new hob, oven and sink were fitted onto the worktops, the floor was tiled with a white marble effect and the boiler was boxed in using a larder unit from B&Q, with doors to match those from HomeStyle.

Old shelving was removed in the pantry and a unit from IKEA was installed with a white worktop placed on top, along with some blinds – one of the only aspects done by professionals.

In total, the kitchen cost £6,852.

For the bathroom, the couple ripped the entirety of the room out using a bolster and after laying out the pipe work, a frame for the shelf in the shower was constructed along with waterproof boarding that was painted with waterproof paint.

After tiling the space, they decided on a black shower tray from Heat and Plum.

#60SecondReview Dower House Hotel & Spa, Knaresborough - Double Room with Bath

A #60SecondReview of My double room with bath at the Dower House and Spa in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire.

I stayed in room 12 in December 2021.

My first impressions were that the room was a bit small for my liking, particularly as somebody travelling with a large guide dog. I was also concerned that the bed duvet felt rather thin for the time of year. The bed itself proved to be incredibly comfortable however - Perhaps a little soft for some peoples preference, And the duvet was remarkably warm for its thickness. In fact, combined with a blazing hot radiator, the room was so warm that I needed to have the window partly open for much of the time - something else that worked well for me, as somebody inclined to feel the cold, but which may not be everybody’s cup of tea. The room itself was cosy, but comfortable, in fact I would say that it met all of my needs for the trip.

More Details of the hotel, including rates, can be found at:
dowerhouse-hotel.co.uk/

#60SecondReview Is my answer to the long and, perhaps overly thorough, hotel room reviews on YouTube, with a view to making it really quick and simple to see whether a room is for you. Any style suggestionsWould be appreciated.

Couple transform dated 1900s home – adding £450,000 to property value

Carla Isolano, 39, a photographer and content creator from Shrewsbury, Shropshire, has given new life to her period home which dates back to the 1900s.

She and her partner, Ben, 43, purchased the five-bedroom, semi-detached property for £445,000 in August 2016 and could see the potential as soon as they stepped inside – particularly liking its original features and high ceilings.

But the home needed a serious revamp to bring it up to the couple’s standards – though they hoped to retain the period elements throughout.

“All the rooms were carpeted, including the bathroom, and we hoped that there were still original floorboards underneath,” Carla told Jam Press.

“It was in need of some TLC, but we could see how beautiful they would become.

“The property hadn’t been decorated for quite some time and the theme was a mix of 80s and 90s.”

They started by tackling the living room and used panelling to revamp the walls, which cost £2,000, followed by sanding and staining the original flooring for £1,000.

Carla said: “We added panelling to the lower half of the room using MDF and moulding strips.

“We then sanded the floors with an industrial sander, which we hired out.

“In the kitchen, we designed this ourselves and bought from DIY Kitchens, an online retailer.

“Although we hired a carpenter to fit ours, we cut out the middle man with no kitchen designer, so we saved money without compromising on quality.

“We completely gutted and refitted the bathroom, then changed the layout by moving the hot water tank into the loft storage area.

“Lastly, in the main bedroom, we added floor to ceiling panelling using MDF and mouldings.

“I also designed a built-in wardrobe with a hidden door to the ensuite.”

As they had no previous DIY experience, they hired professionals to carry out any work they were unable to complete themselves – but still learned some valuable skills.

Since then, Carla and Ben have also built radiator covers, a garden pergola, decking, fencing and a shed.

Luckily, many of the original features – including the authentic flooring – remained intact and were able to be upcycled as new.

Carla said: “[My favourite room] is the living room, because it’s full of period features and has great proportions.

“It’s also got an open fire, which creates a lovely atmosphere.

“We have done all the decorating and as much DIY as we could, as well as most of the garden and the tiling.

“We used plumbers, electricians, plasterers and carpenters for the rest.”

In total, they have spent £85,000 transforming the property and after six years the gorgeous family home is complete.

The house is so popular that Carla has even started renting out the space, called Location House of Beau, for photoshoots and filming.

Firstly, the kitchen can be seen in its original state, with wooden cabinets and plain white work surfaces.

Next, the original lounge can be seen looking drab and dated, while the bathroom looks like it’s come straight out of the 80s.

Plainly decorated bedrooms can be seen, which lack any character.

Carla then cuts to show the kitchen now, which is bright and minimalistic with lots of greenery. Original brickwork is still intact, with brand new appliances integrated underneath.

In the living room, a small lick of paint, some panelling and new furniture is all it took for this room to become a cosy space.

Artwork and new bedding really lifts the main bedroom and is a far cry from its original theme before.

Next, the couple plan to update the hallway and add bespoke shelving, panelling and storage to their playroom.

Sharing advice for other people renovating, Carla added: “Try and do as much as you can yourselves.

“Shop around where you can, as you don’t need to buy the most expensive items - mid range and budget can be really great quality too.

“Finishing touches really do matter, such as changing plastic switches for brass.

“It seems like a small detail, but makes a big difference to the overall look and finish.”

BUDGET BREAKDOWN:

Main bathroom - £9,800

Ensuite - 7,500

Main bedroom - £5,000

Living room - £3,000

Kitchen - £33,000 (incl. boiler and installation)

Garden - £10,000

Miscellaneous - £16,700 (incl. gas repairs, roof and window repairs, electrical work)

Total: £85,000
